Jamaica is the first country in the English-speaking Caribbean to register a geographical indication (G!). According to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), A GI is a sign which is used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are as a result of that
origination. WIPO further states that in order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place, with the qualities
and characteristics or reputation, essentially due to the place of origin. Per the WIPO, having a GI right allows those who have the right of use to
prevent its use by a third party, whose product does not conform to the applicable standards.
